Reshaping The World – Recognizing Basics Of The Ego And How It Works

September 16, 2009

So much of the awakening process seems counterintuitive because it is counterintuitive – to the ego. All this stuff about illusion, dreaming, chains, slavery, gates, blah, blah, blah doesn’t make a whole lot sense when the frame of reference is off, when that reference point is from the ego.

The ego is asleep, thus it cannot realize the awake.

The ego is falsehood, thus it cannot recognize truth.

The ego is slavery, thus it cannot contemplate freedom.

Changing the reference point from the ego to the I Am, from falsehood to truth, sheds light on the counterintuitive, brings the dawn of the “Aha” moment, where it all begins to make sense. And a critical part of this change is beginning to know the enemy within, the ego, some of how it works and functions.

Ego is obstruction, the wall of division, the closed door, the blockage of the flow. It is bound by a set of rules that don’t apply to the awakened state. These rules, thought patterns, and conditionings are the weapons of the ego, maintaining survival through your participation in them. They have fashioned the world that we see, and to see a new world requires a refashioning, a reshaping of so much of what we hold as “true”.

Jesus spoke of this in Saying 22 of The Gospel of Thomas:

Jesus said to them, “When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter [the kingdom].”

The awakened state, the I Am, enlightenment is a reshaping of your being, as different as sight from blindness, walking from sitting, sleeping from awake. It is going in here to create out there. It is realizing that what is out there is a reflection of what is going on in here. It is uniting the opposites, transcending the dichotomy, bringing together intellect and emotion in One. And realizing that this is something that has to be done by you (as Jesus said here – “when you make” – not when God does this for you, when Jesus does this for you, when your mother, or boss, or Imam, or Lama does this for you – again, it’s all about you).

The awakened state exists in a paradox to this division of ego, it is walking through the gateless gate where demons become angels, fighting becomes surrender, out becomes in – all becomes a reversal of the thoughts that ego uses to survive.

The more you fight the more reinforce what you are fighting against ( “Resist not evil” said Jesus).

The more you try to wake up the more you snooze. As Yoda said – “Do or do not. There is not try.”

The more you struggle with demons the longer you give recognition to their existence.

You first have to stop.

Then you have to commit, take your stand, claim your power.

Then you have to move further.

Begin to see the trappings of the ego – how it seduces you with your past, with your conditioned concepts, with guilt and fear. See how the enemy within perpetuates its own existence through occupation of your energy.

If you don’t feed it, it will starve.

No matter how much the ego keeps you thinking that you have to fight against impulses and desires, carry the grievances of the past, suffer torments and abuse, and hold on to the baggage of your childhood, religion, failed relationships, etc., etc. – you don’t have to, and if you want to wake up, you can’t.

Plain and simple – to wake up, you have to quit sleeping. To claim the energy state of enlightenment, you have to take your energy back from the ego and illusion that distracts and occupies your energy in a thousand different ways.

We’ve all got demons that occupy us, hold us back, deplete our energy, keep us engaged in the fight. Stop fighting them, surrender, and they will have nothing to fight, nothing to hold, nothing to deplete, nothing to engage. They lose their purpose. And when they have no purpose of holding you back, haunting your nightmare of sleep, they turn into angels that help lift you our of the muck and mire, awaken you from sleep, cure your blindness.

In the ancient times, when angels and demons first made their appearance on the human landscape, there was not the division between good and bad that we use to judge their roles. Angels were dark at times, light at times. Demons were impediments to progress, and forces that spurred the human on.  As our division has taken root and the theology of separation has taken hold, these forces have been compartmentalized (like everything else). We rail against one and hope for help from the other – and thus we stay locked in the battle of the opposites.

But when you begin to understand the ego and illusion, becoming intimate with the nature of the sleep and dream state, you will discover that angels and demons are two sides of the same coin, and even more of a mindf*ck, that the coin is in you, and that there really is no coin at all.

These realizations come from surrender – when you quit fighting the demon, the demon has no purpose, and that energy you have used (unbeknownst to you) to impede and obstruct your progress, becomes the energy used to move you out of the demonic hell of separation and fear, and you fly on angel wings.

So it is with the ego, that lives off the fight, when you surrender to the source of all life, to God, to the I Am existence, the ego has nothing to fight, and you are free. Counterintuitive? To the ego. But to the I Am, to the awakened, to enlightenment? As natural as that breath you just took.

And the Lion will lay down with the Lamb.

Sounds mystical, airy-fairy, inspiring, and lovely (and maybe a little loony)  – but it is truly just the basic workings of this process.
